Headshot Mike Januik

Mike Januik

Winemaker & Owner

Mike Januik is one of Washington’s most acclaimed winemakers, but he’d rather you taste his wine and decide what you think of his winemaking for yourself. He also thinks it’s important you know he will never call a wine “intense.” That’s a descriptor he reserves for camping trips.

Mike doesn’t think it is essential you know Wine Enthusiast magazine named one of the world’s ten “Masters of Merlot.” He’d be the last guy to tell you he’s had more than a dozen wines appear on Wine Spectator’s prestigious “Top 100” list, including recognition for his own wine as well as Novelty Hill, (the only other label to benefit from his winemaking talents, aside from Januik, of course).

He is more impressed with a good University of Oregon football team than the master’s degree in enology and viticulture he holds from the University of California, Davis. He doesn’t think you’d be interested to know he was the head winemaker at Chateau Ste. Michelle for ten years before leaving to start Januik Winery in 1999 or that he’s been making wine in the Columbia Valley since 1984. But he thinks you might be interested to learn he was once a backcountry ranger; loves to cook; owned a wine shop in Ashland, Oregon; is as well known among family and friends for his fresh fruit smoothies and holiday eggnog as his Cabernet; prefers reading poetry to non-fiction; was once a whitewater river guide and sends text messages to his two sons about as often as he tastes through wines during harvest.

He’s been described as intelligent, creative, compulsive, innovative, compassionate, proud, humble and inspired. He’s part hippy, part establishment and complete perfectionist, and he’s found his sweet spot running a family winery with his wife Carolyn that is all about creating something that brings pleasure to the table. As Mike would say with a shrug, “I want my wines to speak for themselves.” Enough said.

Andrew Januik

Winemaker

Most winemakers have spent majority of their lives in the industry and Andrew Januik is no different – except for the fact that he is only 30 years old. When he was just 13 he started working with wine on the weekends and full-time during his summers. The son of a world-renowned winemaker, Andrew was born with winemaking in his blood and the proof is in the pressing. Every single one of the wines that Andrew has made since starting his eponymous label in 2011 have all been rated above 90 points.

Regardless of his pedigree it’s clear that Andrew’s passion is truly organic; driven not by legacy but by his personal love of the wine and its complexity, the precise science of the winemaking, and the unique climate of the Washington wine industry. A native to the PNW, Andrew is constantly carving time out of his ever-consuming work life to give back to the community that gave him so much. For years he has been volunteering with local at-risk and homeless youth. With such a full plate Andrew manages to keep a level head by venturing out in nature with his suspiciously sweet and rotund lab mix in tow.

The name of his first wine, ‘Stone Cairn’ (which is a trail marker used by hikers and backpackers) is a nod to Andrew’s affinity for the outdoors. Ever since the release of his first vintage Stone Cairn in 2013 the spotlight on Andrew has been continuously growing. Five years later with the release of his third wine looming on the horizon, all eyes are on him again. Now the trick will be balancing his desire to remain hands-on while allowing for the inevitable growth being spurred by the continuous acclaim of his wines. Andrew doesn’t seem to be worried though, as long as he’s still having fun he’s up for the challenge.
