Winter 2018 Cellar Circle Silver and Gold Selections

After a hectic holiday season, January’s more relaxed pace comes as a welcome relief.  Our Winter 2018 Cellar Circle selections were chosen to enjoy while partaking in any one of our favorite winter activities:  après ski, an intimate dinner with friends or curled up on the couch binge-watching Game of Thrones.

Both Classic and Red only members will take home the 2015 Novelty Hill Stillwater Creek Vineyard Merlot from the winery’s estate vineyard, a perennial favorite with consumers and critics alike, consistently rated 90+.  With its ripe cherry and dark mocha aromas and flavors, the wine is a perfect complement to Chef Seth Fernald’s recipe for Delicata Squash with Chevre and Coco Nibs, included with your shipment.

Classic members will also enjoy the newly released 2016 Januik Cold Creek Vineyard Chardonnay, produced following traditional Burgundian techniques.  Mike made his first Cold Creek Vineyard Chard in 1990, and it has remained his favorite Washington Chardonnay vineyard since then.  Red only members will receive the 2015 Januik Champoux Vineyard Malbec from another one of Mike’s favorite Washington vineyards.  Located in the Horse Heaven Hills, Champoux is renowned for its red Bordeaux grapes.

May you savor these wines in good health and good company in 2018 and beyond.  Wishing you and your family all the best in the new year.

Exclusive Pre-Release of 2015 Januik Champoux Cab for Cellar Circle Members Only

Calling all Cab collectors!  The 2015 Januik Champoux Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon will be pre-released October 14-15 and available for purchase to Cellar Circle members exclusively for a limited time.  A perennial favorite, the Januik Champoux Cab sells out quickly so this year, we are offering club members first dibs on this exciting, new vintage.  The wine will be available for tasting at the winery both Saturday and Sunday, and as a special treat winemaker Mike Januik will pour the wine himself from 12-1 pm on Saturday, October 14.

Those of you who have enjoyed Mike’s Champoux Cab in the past know this Horse Heaven Hills classic is always a beautiful blend of power and elegance, consistently rated 90+ vintage after vintage. “Champoux Vineyard is a Washington equivalent of a French grand cru site, and long-tenured winemaker Mike Januik shows his skilled hand with its fruit, producing a wine that shows finesse and balance and a memorable, velvety texture,” wrote Seattle Met critic Sean Sullivan in naming the 2014 vintage to the magazine’s list of the Top 100 Wines of 2017.

The 2015 growing season was another excellent vintage, particularly for red wines, and as good as the 2014 was, Mike tells us he likes the 2015 even more for its balance, ripeness and finesse.  Quantities are limited.

Meet Our New Cellar Circle Manager

My name is Michelle Allen, and I am the new wine club manager at Novelty Hill-Januik. Many of you may have already met me in the tasting room or at a release party, two of my favorites parts of the job. You may have also seen my husband Albert helping my children chow down on Chef Seth’s Wine’d Down Wednesday menu.

I have been with Novelty Hill-Januik for four years, most recently assisting Andrea Slichter, our national director of sales. Working with Andrea provided me with an incredible opportunity to showcase our wonderful wines around the country, but the chance to work with our Cellar Circle members both close to home and in other parts of the U.S. was too good to pass up, so here I am!

I follow Laura Emil in this position who left the winery this summer to join our e-commerce provider. She sends her best to each and every one of you.

It is an honor to be your Cellar Circle manager. I take great pride in cultivating and nurturing relationships with all you. Please feel free to say hello or ask for me next time you visit the winery. I can also be reached by phone (425-481-5502) or email at

Seattle Met Top 100 2017

The highly anticipated Seattle Met Top 100 Wines of 2017 is out now, and we are thrilled to announce Novelty Hill and Januik collectively have four wines on the list.  Seattle Met wine columnist Sean Sullivan assembles the annual Top 100, now in its eighth year.  “Back-to-back warm vintages deliver bold, ripe results — and a banner season for drinkers,” the magazine writes.  We agree.  Here are Sean’s tasting notes:

Outstanding White Wines  2015 Novelty Hill Sauvignon Blanc, Stillwater Creek Vineyard “Sauvignon Blanc can be a particularly challenge in our warm growing climate, but vibrant aromas of cut grass, lime, herb and tropical fruit — giving way to tart zippy flavors with a lightly creamy feel — show this grapes’s true capabilities here.”

Best Cabernet Sauvignons 2014 Januik Cabernet Sauvignon, Champoux Vineyard  “Champoux Vineyard is a Washington equivalent of a French grand cru site, and long-tenured winemaker Mike Januik shows his skilled hand with its fruit, producing a wine that shows finesse and balance and a memorable, velvety texture.”

Wines to Buy Right Now  2014 Januik Merlot, Columbia Valley “Few wineries in the state consistently provide as much quality and value; this wine shows aromas and flavors of plum, milk chocolate, and blue fruit.”  2014 Novelty Hill Cabernet Sauvignon, Columbia Valley “A mouthful of cherry and chocolate flavors that persist to the finish; further proof of Mike Januik’s ability to consistently make a high quality cabernet at an affordable price.

Limited quantities of the 2014 Januik Merlot, Columbia Valley remain and are available through our online store.  Purchase

Meet August’s Employee of the Month

Olivia Frederiksen started working at Novelty Hill Januik in March of 2017, and is now our newest Event Staff Lead.  She attended University of Idaho, and now is attending Washington State University. Olivia is getting her degree in HBM and hopes to work somewhere in Hospitality management one day.  One of her favorite things about the winery is getting to listen to Mike Januik’s daily jokes. Her favorite wine here at Novelty Hill Januik is Andrew Januik Stone Cairn Cabernet Sauvignon. Although Olivia enjoys cutting butter for events in the kitchen, her favorite thing to do is work our events and help run them. One thing Olivia thinks is interesting about working at Januik is that no day is ever the same, there are always different people to meet, and different events to work.
